The Difference Between Work and Hobby

WORK is what somebody else wants and pays you to do...

After the Fall of Adam & Eve they and all of their descendents had to live by toil:

Genesis 3:19: By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."

Sometimes People are lazy and do not want to work. This is addressed many times in the Bible; here is one of them:

Proverbs 10:4-5, “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich. He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame”

a HOBBY is what you want and you pay to do…

While there is a season for everything according to Ecclesiastes 3:1, the Bible also offers cautions:

1 John 2:15-17, 15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father[a] is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.

Some claim the Bible says, ‘eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die’ (Isaiah 22:13 ) but these were the words of the wicked and not the righteous. Now in a different context the Bible does say that there is nothing better (Eccl. 8:15), it is better to consider:

Philippians 4:8, Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Sometimes a person is paid for their hobby and then it becomes labor...

In a sense we cannot escape the curse or consequence of the Fall in this life. What I mean by this is we are not in the Garden of Eden anymore and it is pointless to rebel against God in trying to make a paradise on earth for your own pleasures. But on the other hand if you are a new creature in Christ, forgiven of your sins, The Spirit of God can and does work in our hearts to have different attitudes. And if our attitude is changed, why should we mind?

But you can receive a ‘blessing of contentment’ and work becomes a joy...

Ecclesiasters 2:24-25, 24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,25 for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?

Take not that the verse uses the words satisfaction and enjoyment which are gifts from God. Don’t let anyone or anything rob you of godly satisfaction for whatever it is God has called you to do for His Glory. Rebellion, a bad attitude, even certain chemicals used in substance abuse can rob the mind, heart or brain of the feeling of satisfaction. What good is that? But the root word in enjoyment is ‘joy’ and it is in the joy of the Lord that we find our strength (Nehemiah 8:10B)

1 Corinthians 10:31, 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
